The future of Indiana was the focus of the breakfast event launching the 10th annual Parenting Awareness Month Indiana (PAMI) on April 1.

The event was put on by Indiana Parenting Institute, IPI, which, for the past 10 years, has kept the idea that the children are the future at the forefront of its work and programs. IPI is a nonprofit organization that works with other organizations and individuals throughout Indiana to help create more responsible, involved parents.

The PAMI Breakfast featured several notable speakers, including Indiana First Lady Karen Pence, Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, and Gary Community School Corporation Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Pruitt, all of whom made mention of the positive effects that good parenting has on children’s futures.

The First Lady, who is a mother of three adult children, recalled the time in her life when she was raising teenagers. She confessed that there were many days and nights when it was difficult. However, she stuck to her philosophy of loving them through it all. All three of her children are now very successful and one is serving as a second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

Dr. Pruitt also cited her struggles as a mother. As a single parent, she was forced to work nights in order to attend her children’s events during the days. She also put herself through school to make a better life for them. Now, because they grew up knowing her love, hard work, and dedication, both of her children have experienced success and obtained Master’s degrees.

Dr. Pruitt also noted that, as the Superintendent, she sees the direct result of positive parenting techniques which is the success of the children in her schools. She reminded the audience that parents are children’s first teachers, and children most often realize their full potential when they have a supportive home environment.

IPI will be holding several more events that will promote responsible parenting throughout the remainder of April. For more information on IPI or any of its events, call (219) 886-1111 or visit
